for a while there i was sympathetic to tumblr because of how much they’re in debt; i was kind of like “well of course they’re absolutely desperate for new users, they literally need the money or else tumblr goes down forever”. and then suddenly today it hit me that there’s actually no fucking reason for that debt to be causing these ui changes? the userbase has been INCREDIBLY clear about what they want from tumblr over the years, not to mention clear about the fact that even twitter people don’t need this place to look like twitter. it actually would be very… EASY? for them to just make changes in a direction people would actually be HAPPY with?
for fuck’s sake there were people trying to organize a “crab day” for tumblr despite tumblr doing nothing but telling us to go fuck ourselves for months on end. there were people spending hundreds of dollars on check marks just for the glee of MAKING FUN of twitter. can you IMAGINE how much money this userbase would donate to tumblr if they actually made ui updates geared toward what people have been asking for?
if tumblr actually crowdsourced ideas or even just LISTENED to their userbase it may have been possible for them to make way more money than they’re begging for now, they just insist on trying to drive their actual demographic and loyal userbase out for literally no reason
When I was growing up in the 90s, in the days before search engines and everyone being online all the time, I saw plenty of trans women, just as sob stories directed at cis people on daytime television, freakshows directed at cis people on daytime television, the punchlines to hateful and violent jokes broadcast at all hours, and as a species of sexual fetish available to the consumers of niche websites and periodicals. The horizons of the possible to me looked like that: you could be someone else's tragedy or someone else's fantasy. The possibility of living a normal and dignified life seemed marginal. There were resources for trans people but they were aimed at adults. There were groups, online and off, aimed at adults. There were definitely trans people living normal-ish lives like mine, but they weren't people I was supposed to know or see. Society insisted they were dangerous to me.
I want to finish this with a joke, like "Good thing our benevolent corporate overlords have decided we had it too good for too long and brought back the fetish/corpse dichotomy", but it's not even just them. Trans people, trans women especially, and our silly little culture and our silly little jokes and our silly little attempts to find and know each other make cis people who, in their view, have to endure them - those things make them seethe. It is an upset to this social situation, this social situation they consider the natural order, which they grew up with and internalized as much as we did, that we have the audacity to see ourselves in things besides jerkoff mags and human corpses. I suggest they die mad about it, and I suggest everyone who shares their frustration die mad about it
as 90% of desktop users have probably found out, today @staff released an update that for some insane reason COMPLETELY remodels the dashboard to replicate twitter's. this is of course in the wake of numerous other thoroughly hated changes and a continued refusal to fix any of the site's actual problems, half of which stem directly from site management.
HOWEVER, thanks to the power of jQuery, i was able to throw together a userscript that remodels the dashboard back to its original look almost perfectly.
here is my dashboard right now, with the script active:
ALT
and here is the old dashboard in separate tab container that hasn't received the update:
ALT
it's hardly perfect; i had trouble making it force reload to the fixed layout when switching between other pages and the dashboard, and it currently only fixes just the dashboard. it's also completely untested on browsers other than firefox, and chances are it looks a bit screwy on ultrawide monitors. but for now at least, it's a good fix.
the unfucker is a tampermonkey userscript. all you have to do to use it is install the tampermonkey extension, hit "create new script", and replace the default code on the page with the script (link here) and save it.
If you, like me, had uBlock origin block the 'Radar' bit on the right hand side of your old tumblr, you can go to line 50 of the script which is currently the below:
holy shit this kid who took down the PRESIDENT OF STANFORD is an EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD FRESHMAN????? imagine being the president of an elite university with a celebrated scientific career and you get taken down by a TEENAGER writing for the student paper of your own university who broke a story about decades of data manipulation and scientific misconduct that led to an eight-month investigation (which itself was riddled with issues that the same student reporter also continued to expose). imagine being on the board of trustees or in any other position of leadership at this institution and watching this teenager clown on you for not being able to do your fucking jobs. he had to lay it all out on a fucking platter for you to bring it home. insane.
“oh they’re not taking away chronological dashboard, well everything’s okay then” they also said in the post they’re making reblogs collapsed (like comments on twitter) so you won’t see the full conversation in a post. they also won’t get rid of tumblr live despite it being an annoying and cancerous data-miner that isn’t legal in much of the world. they won’t even let you opt out of tumblr live for more than seven days. they implemented a terrible photo viewer that mimics tiktok and makes it so you can’t zoom in on images. they took away the ability to view prev tags. they’re making it so you have to sign in with your email to view almost any thing on tumblr. they’ve already made it so you have to sign in to send asks, even on anon. they’re slowly phasing out custom blog themes.
the things that make tumblr at all usable and favored by us– the older web blog features, the anonymity– that is still being taken away. it HAS been being taken away for some time now. i am urging you people to reveiwbomb the tumblr app. force them to acknowledge that users do not like these changes.
Rewatching Truman Show for the first time in a long time, and the detail that’s stuck with me this time is the set design.
The characters drive modern cars and hock modern products, but it’s all presented with a veneer of 1950s wholesome applecheeked Americana. Truman’s life is presented as an escape for the audience from the drudgery of the modern day, and the aesthetic they’ve chosen for this is the post-war economic boom. This is the simple time, the movie says. This is the good time. Doesn’t the modern day suck? Let’s go back and see our friends from the days when life was good.
And it’s a lie. Truman’s life is a lie, and the image of white picket fenced suburbia they’ve presented is a lie. It’s an elaborate construction to recreate a false memory that’s comfortable for advertisers. The movie is a satire, but it’s also a very blatant statement against the nostalgia for a golden age which never existed. It’s a lie. It doesn’t exist.
I don’t know. I’m spitballing. I’m biased because I despise mid-20th century Americana and I naturally treat it with hostility, but it’s very gratifying to see a movie kind of agree with me.
Earlier in the summer, I went to Florida with my friend. We decided to visit a town nearish to where we were staying called Seaside, as we had heard it was a cute place. What I did not know at the time was that Seaside is the place where they filmed The Truman Show. It was a "master-planned community," constructed in the 80s to be the perfect beach town.
Seaside, FL
Seahaven
And yes, it really does look Like That. Not just in their tourist-agency photos, in real life it looks like that. Arguably the irl Seaside is even prettier than movie Seahaven, because the the office buildings where Truman works don't exist; the town is 100% cutesy homes and little shops.
I'd use a tumblr badge if they gave me one that was evil bleeding skull flaming skull dark blood skull vampire demon wings horned skull oozing fangs sinister skull. For free
